It’s never too early to start reading with babies. Some parents even begin when the baby is still in the womb. Newborn babies may not be able to understand the words in books but they can still get enjoyment by listening to the sound of books being read aloud. Babies explore books through their senses which may include their mouths, their hands and their eyes.
Babies start mouthing objects when they are able to bring their hands to their mouths around the age of 4 months. They may chew on books as they learn about the characteristics of books. Brightly colored books with bold colors may capture babies’ visual attention. Books that invite infants to touch and feel are a great way to engage them. When they are able, encourage babies to hold books and touch or pat the pictures while they are being read to. Reading to infants can help them develop a lifelong love for books.
