Early Literacy

Updated: Jul 24, 2023

But what is early literacy?

Using good strategies to promote, facilitate and encourage early literacy in young children is not only a great benefit for them, but it’s also our responsibility as parents. This can start in their early years of development, before they begin school.

Literacy is the mastery of reading and writing within a specific language and its proper use in everyday life. Being able to read and write is an important skill that enables us to understand and engage with the world around us.

However, early literacy in young children refers to the progressive path of knowledge that children experience before they officially learn to read and write, that is, all the contact and knowledge they acquire from language, speaking and hearing.

Why is early literacy important for young children?

One of the main reasons is that starting with some foundation in early literacy will greatly facilitate the process and accelerate the assimilation of information. In addition, by learning the basics at home, the place where they feel most secure and loved, everything they have learned will adhere more firmly to them Likewise, another of the most important reasons is that they will have the ability to better express their feelings, and thus, be able to defend themselves and make themselves understood.

Finally, it has been demonstrated that infants exposed to books from an early age develop a much broader language and a better facility for reading and writing than those who have not been exposed at a later time.
